The world’s big online retailer, Amazon, keeps improving its logistics system and seeking ways to speed up the shipping processes, to the extent that it has even stated that it could soon send products to customers before they purchase them, that is, something similar to imagining or predicting what someone will order and sending it.
It really seems quite strange to think that a company is able to send a product to a customer even before they order it. Weird and futuristic though it may sound, this is the new project Amazon is already successfully testing in some of the most important cities in the world.
Many questions arise about this: how does it work?, who is the product sent to if this has not been ordered?, where?, how and when this is paid?, what is the rate?
Amazon is developing what it calls “Method and System for Anticipatory Package Shipping” in order to reduce virtually to “zero” the time passed between the customer clicking on “buy” and the order arriving to their address.
Once more, the data become fundamentalin this model, since Amazon, building onthe browsing history of their customers, develops predictive modelsby areas which enable to predict, a priori, the number of each type of product that will be sold in those areas on those dates.
Relying on these calculations, the system performs a series of speculative shipping actionstogether with the orders made by customers, including a certain amount of products in their delivery trucks so that the trucks always leave full, maximizing their logistics capacity. This will also serve to sell out all the stock, promote specific products, etc.
Once on delivery, the products that are not ordered during that time, will appear as last-minute offers, with a clear strategy of prices decreasing to the return cost and in a really appealing way for customers.
It seems a hard task for Amazon to implement this system in its complex international logistics, but the idea is that buying online can be increasingly easy, fast and beneficial.
