Sports and competition attract crowds of people, who are looking for sport trials or events in which their strengths can be tested. This is well known in León as this city welcomes thousands of foreign athletes throughout the year.
In addition to respecting our traditions as much as admiring our monuments and enjoying our gastronomy, we want to take care of the athletes that visit us: runners, bikers, dancers, basketball players, chess players…
SOME RECENT SPORT EVENTS
February Fitness and February Hip Hop welcomed important professionals from all over the world with innovative work methods, with a total of 1,900 participants. The first event focuses on developing all the disciplines of fitness (directed activities, Pilates, personal training and indoor cycle). The second activity looks towards the dance world, specifically through hip hop. In this last edition, February Hip Hop counted on choreographers from Los Angeles, Canada or Norway, collaborators of international artists such as Beyoncé or Chris Brown, attracting a total of 600 professionals of the dance of all Europe.
The IX Half Marathon of León (March, 26th of 2017) brought together 6.000 runners (in its 3 different categories: half marathon, 5K and 2K) Running along the streets of a two thousand-year city, gem of medieval history and a real discovery for gastronomy, in a circuit that goes around downtown, has unmistakable appeal, and runners that take part of this event repeat the experience year after year.
We do not want to forget those other “charming races” such as Runners vs Bikers, Transcandamia, or -in the province of León- Biosfera Trail or Babia Sherpa Tour
Vuelta a León BTT (April 21st, 22nd and 23rd) – a mountain bike race that has 3 legs in the province of León- and the playoffs for the golden category of the feminine basketball tournament hosted by Club Baloncesto Aros have taken place recently in the city.
SOME OTHER UPCOMING EVENTS
In July, the MAGISTRAL CHESS TOURNAMENT Ciudad de León, that will celebrate its 30th edition and it is one of the classics of the international circuit, will take place.
The tournament is carried out with a traditional format with four players and a cup system with semifinals and finals that makes the competition very interesting. There will be three world-class players (Vishy Anand, Grand Master – INDIA, Wesley So, Grand Master – USA, Jan-Krzysztof Duda, Grand Master – Poland) and a Leonese who is making his way to the chess elite (Jaime Santos, International Master).
FOOTBALL AND HANDBALL
Finally, two great sport clubs must be highlighted: Cultural y Deportiva Leonesa, one of the football teams on fashion that may work its way up to the next category, and Ademar León that belongs to the first national division.
León is all set to host major sport events, in addition of having great event management professionals. If you are passionate about sports, León is one of destinations to make into account.
