7 are the Biosphere Reserves located inside the province. In Spain there are a total of 42.
The United Nation (UN) is in charge of identifying the Biosphere Reserves included in the different regions. As for the province of León, the UN recognises 7 reserves: Picos de Europa, Valleys of Laciana Babia, Omaña and Luna, The Ancares leoneses, The Argüellos and the Alto Bernesga. León alone has, indeed, more areas recognised than many countries, such as for example Japan, Portugal or Austria.
According to the UN, the Biosphere Reserves are “areas comprising terrestrial, marine and coastal ecosystems, designated by the UNESCO’s Men and the Biosphere Programme (MAB)”. In them, solutions are promoted to reconcile the conservation of biodiversity with its sustainable use, economic development, research and education.
Besides, and according to the UN, they are “Science and Sustainability support sites”, that is, special places designated to test interdisciplinary approaches to understanding and managing changes and interactions between social and ecological systems, including conflict prevention and management of biodiversity.”
Biosphere Reserves provide the region with the opportunity to innovate in sustainable development, reduce the loss of biodiversity, improve the quality of life or favour the social, economic and cultural conditions of the people living in there.
