The second edition of ForoEmpresasLeónUP, held this week, analysed the new regulatory compliance requirements to place products on the US market. Although you can find all the information about the Foro in a previous post, we will try to explain here those new requirements to those of you who could not accompany us.
What is the Food Safety Modernization Act? The Food Safety Modernization Act was enacted by former President Barack Obama on January 4th 2011, and from then on it has been evolving and has been reinforced up until this year. It aims to prevent foodborne diseases, since 3,000 die each year in the USA from foodborne diseases and 128,000 are hospitalised due to the same cause.
What is this act about? It basically focuses on two aspects: rules on preventive controls for human food and rules on preventive controls for food for animals. As for the first issue, the facilities involved in human food are required to have a “system for the analysis of risk-based preventive controls”, as well as qualified employees trained in the oversight and management of such preventive controls”. As regards the preventive controls for food for animals, it is also required good practice in manufacturing food, as well as the analysis of hazards by trained staff.
All these procedures are subject to compliance dates and also have exceptions. If your enterprise exports food to the USA or you are interested in starting from scratch, contact us here or call +34 987 875 875 and we will be pleased to help you.
